Grinder Build: Finally Up and Running

Sorry for disappearing for so long, but I've been working on my 2x72" belt grinder for what seems like an eternity. I finally got to chew up some steel and try it out. It's amazing how fast a blaze 60 chews through 5/32" stock.

240V single phase VFD in NEMA 4 enclosure
2 hp, 3 phase WEG motor
Operator control panel w/ tachometer (and SFM) display
Classy 8 Ball

Work in Process - Checking drive wheel and tracking.

VFD Enclosure

Revving up that motor.

Chomping some stainless

Now to get some practice on this machine and get back to the fun.

Cheers,

Dan

Nice Grinder. How do you keep the belt tensioned? A compression spring in the vertical post maybe? Do you press down on the 8 ball to change belts?

Im asking because i am planning some ideas for mine, and i like the simplicity of this.

Cheers

Yes, exactly. A 30# spring inside the vertical receiver that pushes up on the tracking pillar. I got the idea from Alaskabearhawk on YouTube. He has several grinder vids and explains how he did his platen and large diameter contact wheel.

I also rigged a 4" crowned caster wheel into a drive wheel by pressing the roller bearings out and pressing a bushing in for the 7/8" keyed shaft of the motor. Works really well and has no problems with the RPMs.

Good luck and post some pics of your build if you get a chance.

Dan

Excellent, I am still in the ideas/planning stage at the moment.
Most of my drawings so far are looking very similar to this. I might pick up some SHS and have a play around tonight.
Cheers

Seemus,

I have quite a bit of detail in my blog page. Shows cut sizes and what not. Get your ideas flowing from there: http://dcknives.blogspot.ca/p/2-x-72-belt-grinder.html

Maybe some of the other ideas on that page may be of interest. It is kind of still a work in progress still but I am updating is a few times a week.

Cheers!
Dan

Happy to help if you need more info. I just realised you are down in Tasmania. Sorry about the Imperial units mate! In Canada we're supposed to be metric since 1974, but I am an old fart from the building trades and cannot shake the inches and pounds.

Thanks for the help all good with the imperial mate. The mill where i completed my apprenticship was built in the 30's, I can work in both In fact i would say half of Tasmania is still Imperial ...although i am building mine metric. Thanks for the inspiration with this very well made machine.

D I Y - Small Wheel Attachment Kit

I got around to building a small wheel set for my DIY belt grinder. Works pretty slick as long as I don't rev it too much.

All the gory details on how I did it are in my blog page: http://dcknives.blogspot.ca/p/small-...for-bg272.html

Cheers!

Dan ,

There is only one issue I see with your VFD Enclosure it is not vented and does not have a filter for fresh air ! this will cause the controller to overheat in the future possibly .
