I have my blade cut out and profiled! No picture though.
I questioned myself today whether I should bow out of this KITH. I got an order for 10 knives to build for a guy! Anyway, I've got most all year to get his knives built. So I will get my B & T done. I'm building my "Quail" with brass bolsters I think. Haven't decided on the wood yet. After investigating a contact wheel, (whew $$$), it will be a flat grind. __________________ Find me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gpopecustomknives/ Gloria In Excelsis Deo!! |

Well, gee, you've also got six months to build the KITH knife. Not exactly a rush deal ....

You're making me want to add bolsters to mine now. haven't done bolster yet. So, I may try it.

Dovetails aren't particularly difficult...just have to keep you brain one step ahead of your hands. (wink)

Okay, you experienced experts weigh-in on this. Grizzly has a relatively inexpensive wheel but I've read where people have issues with balance and getting a belt to ride on it. A lawnmower wheel? __________________ Find me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gpopecustomknives/ Gloria In Excelsis Deo!! |

I can confirm that my wheel from grizzly was dished pretty badly and the belt wouldnt ride on it well. I put 2 wraps of electrical tape on it and the belt rides on it like a dream now. I also tried filind it some to flatten it but got scared I would ruin the wheel and opted for electrical tape instead. I think filing it so it has a slight crown would be perfectly fine though.

I made a 5" wheel for hollow grinding folder blades from a heavy cart wheel I got from MSC for $25 delivered. It is 2" wide, has an aluminum hub, and a hard polyurethane covering. It isn't as nice as a 'real' contact wheel but it is perfectly usable. So yeah, what that guy did would probably be worth doing...

my contact wheel is a roller coaster caster. I don't recall the price. but it was what was suggested when i built my grinder. the cost was about half what the regular contacts were going for at the time if i remember correctly

after a google search for 2"x8" caster i found quite a few in the $40 range. not sure you would need an 8" for this KITH. I'm sure smaller diameter one are cheaper

Making mine from O1. Not sure on the handle yet. I have the blade profiled and hollow ground. Bolsters will be brass. Have the brass cut and dovetailed.still need to shape them though. Trying to figure the best way to taper the tang. Wish I had a surface grinder
