Linerlock Spacers

I am working on my first linerlock and I am having problems making the spacers and pivot to the correct length. I am using 3/16" pivot and 1/8" pivot for the stop pin and other spacers as in Don Robinsons book. The tools I have to work with are a KMG grinder with a platen and 8" wheel and a drill press. Anybody know a trick to doing this operation with these tools.

Thanks

Steve Patterson

Hi, Steve.

Look in your book where it shows grinding the pins and bushing to length.

Make yourself a holder for the pins and bushing by drilling and reaming holes to match in a small piece of flat ground steel a little thinner than the finished pin length.

Put the pins into the holder, go to your KMG, and grind the ends of the pins until they measure a few thousandths longer than you want them to be. Use a caliper.

Go to your bench, lay a piece of coarse wet or dry sandpaper on a flat surface such as glass plate or plastic, and using the holder, move the holder with the pins in it against the sandpaper, using your fingers to force the pins down. I glue the sandpaper to the plastic sheet with rubber glue, so it's easily replaced. I use this sandpaper/plastic sheet also for deburring flat surfaces after grinding.

Sand and measure with a caliper until they are finished to length.

The holder keeps the ends square to the diameter.

How come you didn't ask me this question? I like to help via email too.

Thanks Don

Forgot about your email. I am sure I'll have more questions.

This is how I do it (how Don just described). The hand-sanding part can be slow going, but the results are great if you are patient. I use it as a time to meditate about saving up for a surface grinder.

I bought my 3/16 spacers from MSC. Work great ! They have a 2-56 hole in them already and are Stainless. part # 67712521 from www.mscdirect.com
