Gene Osborn's brand new lockback folder video

Ive just gone thru Gene's new DVD's teaching Lockback folders. The two disc set is absolutely packed with information needed to successfully create a lockback folder.

Gene starts with all the design elements and lays out several folders; Plain lockback, scale release, toggle release, bolster release, extended tang, all the variations are laid out from scratch using pen and paper and then made in Gene's shop while you watch.

Almost all the work is accomplished using his drill press and a belt grinder. He does a couple of operations on his small milling machine, but as you know there are many ways to do anything.

A milling machine isn't necessary to make lockbacks, but it's handy if you have one.

Gene's hollow grinding jig is shown in action making several blades.

Several kinds of furniture are covered; making and fitting bolsters, different scale materials, shaping, sanding and finishing.

Gene shows his different styles of filework, both on blades and back-spines and on the liners.

Each type of knife is made and displayed.

I used to make basic lockbacks many years ago, and have often wondered how a scale release or a bolster release was made, but never tried it myself.

Now I know how it's done.

I worked on that one for a long time and hope I covered it all.
I know it is different thinking but it came from me, what did you expect?
I tried to present the concept of lockbacks and illiminate the guess work.
You know my knives are all one of a kind, this was the only way I could think of to show how...the same locking mechanism does it all.
I was tickled to think you might learn from it too.

BTW, Don and I are building a pocket knife DESIGN video due early 2011.
It will literally have dozens of plans to copy and/ or show you how to change and alter them. Most all of these designs are one handed designs too. Folder makers will want this as soon as it comes out.

Duuuuude! That video is very good. Would have written back sooner , but have been in my shop putting ideas to work. I really like the idea about the pivot. I put it to work on a lockback that has been sitting on the bench for tooo long. It just seemed to go together really well. I decided to make this first one a demo knife so one side, instead of a side plate , I am using clear plastic so you can see the insides. I am making the spring as part of the lock bar, (Lake style) so will be in the shop heat treating today. Once I get the bugs worked out of that, I need to get started on two lock backs that have been on order for way too long.

I just finished watching three videos.

The folding knife video is definitely very good. For those that have never seen anyone make a lockback, Gene sure does a good job of explaining it. I especially like the lockbar fitup and polishing part as it explains in very good detail how to do it.

I also watched "The art of Scrimshaw" by Linda Karst Stone. Awesome video. She is such an artist and she sure makes scrimshaw look easy.

The third video was the hunter video by Gene. This is a very good fixed blade tutorial. Gene describes the fitup well and there are a lot of good tips.

Overall three great videos for learning how to do things right.

I recommend these three as well as any of the videos at Centercross, they all are great.

Producing Lockback Folders is a very different type of video.
I don't teach how to make a knife, but rather the concept of how to produce them and make each one unique as you go.
No matter how different our designs may be, the geometry works.

BTW, Bob's video is excellent too, "Electrolysis of Knifemaking".
Stencils, etching, logo's, anodizing, colored filework, gold plating...lots of good stuff in that one for sure.

Years ago, I had a VCR tape of Gene's that was unsurpassed in what it taught about knives. Hence, I wasn't even interested in making knives, and I learned more about jigs and set up from that than anything else. This lockback video is in the same class as that.

I dabbled in knifemaking back when Moran et al were just starting the school in Arkansas but drifted out because of cost and the difficulty in starting up. WHen I found Gene and his video at a gun show, I was into woodwork and got it 'cause I like knives.

The lock-blade video is everything that old VCR was plus the advantage of many years experience. I've asked Gene for years for it and it was well worth the wait. It's finally kicked me over the edge and I am just going to have to try to make a folder now. There is a ton of great stuff here and the approach is significantly different from any other videos I've seen (and I think I own all of Center Cross's)

Now I gotta watch the hunter one and see if it is as good as the original.

After making videos for almost 10 years, I finally stopped to make a couple in my own shop again.

The Hunter is a beginner level video but the lockback video is for "producing" pocket knives.
