Those are for electro-chemical etching so I can't say for sure, but I doubt the results would be very good. A pencil wouldn't scratch through the resist material on the screen. After you did get a logo scratched into the material, you would have to be careful to keep the acid on top of the material - in other words, no acid 'bath'. Success would depend on how well the acid was able to pass through the silk backing material...........

I believe that you could scratch a logo onto those sheets but I doubt a pencil would do it. I think a pencil would just write on it. Maybe something like a sharpened brass rod would be better.
However, if that's how you are going to use that material there may be an easier and better way to do that same kind of technique. I have done it using Asphalltum Varnish. Just paint some of the varnish on your blade and let it dry over night. Then use a stylus (sharpened brass rod) to write or draw in the varnish. Put Ferric Chloride or some other acid over the mark to etch the exposed steel. Then use turpentine to remove the varnish. It doen't make a great mark but it's easy and cheap and the results are surely as good as you'd get with those electromark sheets. An even quicker way is to coat an area on your blade with a thick layer of Dye Chem and use it the same way. It's not quite as good as the Asphaltum but it's much faster and will give you a good idea of how those marks will look .... |

Bill, just to add to what Ray said, David Boye has a book out called "Step by Step Knifemaking" that covers this in depth.Dave
