Stag Handle Fit & Finish

Hey Guys,
This is my first Stag Handle, I cut both scales from a matching pair of antler so the handle naturally contours the hand like how we shape other materials. I'm wondering what to do with the Corby bolts and thong tube around the natural ridges in the Stag? I don't want to muck up the natural curves and texture.

The plan was to grind down to the top of the ridges and buff off the edges, but I'm wondering if that's standard practice in order to have the best fit & finish? Or does one Dremel the fittings to match the ridges?

Input appreciated!

Thanks
Steve

Sorry, I can't view the photos, but you can do it either way, it's often done grinding the bolts just down to, or even beyond the first ridges, or you can dremel them to the shape of the ridges. I always grind them down to and into the ridges. Check out my photos at www.srjknives.com. To each his own, do it both ways, see which you like the best.

Thanks Steve & Sam,
I'll take your approach and start by grinding slightly into the ridges & see how it looks.

Fixed the pics, Yes they are high, I thought better ask the question before grinding too far and regretting it.

I'll post more pics when done.

Steve

Sounds good. You need to, in my opinion, grind the screws down to the level of the stag, or whatever handle material you are using. Depth, after that is a personal thing. You can do it just barely toucing the stag ridges, flush, or well into the stag, to give it some shape and sculpture. Try them all, some handles lend themselves well to one procedure, others work better another way.

it seems like lovless would grind all the way down into the stag, to get the contour of the handle just the way he wanted it. I havn't done alot of stag handles, but I have always liked to leave as much of the natural texture of the stag on the handle as possible. but thats just me.

Either way has been and will be done, depends on the maker, and, of course the customer.

Here you go Guys, some pics of progress.
I was apprehensive at first as I wanted to keep as much of the natural texture as possible.
I ended up grinding way more than originally intended but it was a bit "chubby" and needed to loose some heft around the girth. The result feels great in the hand and I'm looking forward to doing another one.

It's only roughed out with a bit of 150 grit hand sanding.

The question now is how to finish it to bring out it's best? Any tips Guys?

Cheers,
Steve
