I've got the knife bug - Thanks Steve!

Hi Guys, I thought it was about time I introduced myself. I?ve been loitering here for a while learning enough to get started in knifemaking. Until now I didn?t think I had anything worthy of posting.

Thank you so much Steve for your excellent Sub Hilt DVD, it was the inspiration for me to cobble a knife shop together over the last year or so and build my first ?proper? knife, with more to come in the future as I?m completely hooked.

I watched the DVD?s it at least 1/2 a dozen times whilst putting my shop together and then another ? dozen or so as I was putting steel to grinder. It wasn?t until I was actually grinding a blade did it seem like I was watching it for the first time again, picking up on the subtle hand nuances of grinding and assembly techniques you demonstrate so well. You?ve taken years off my learning curve and made my first attempt a keeper!

Here?s some pics of my first finished knife. It?s a Loveless inspired drop point. I thought that was a sensible place to start out and it?s something I?ll get a lot of use out of.

It's in ATS-34 with stainless fittings and black linen Micarta.

Thanks again,
Steve

Great looking knife, Steve. Thank for showing it to us and for the kind words. I'm happy that the DVD was helpful. Welcome to the forum and keep up the great work, OK?

Hi Steve,
Here are the hunters I've been working on. they are all in AST-34.

Above is a 3.75" Drop Point with Black Linen Micarta / Stainless guard etc. I did this for my Father as he liked the first knife so much he wanted one just like it for himself. I'm working on a sheath for it, as you can probably tell, it's not quite finished yet, wow this is a steep learning curve!

Above is a 5" Utility in the same materials, this i think is my favorite so far.

Above is a 3.75" Semi Skinner with Green Canvas Micarta.

What an evolving learning experience this is. every step of the process there is a new skill to learn or piece of equipment to build. My current challenge is getting consistency with my home built electro-etcher. At least I won't loose my tools now with all the practice I've had.

More to come!
Cheers,
Steve

Sure will Steve!
Below is a Semi Skinner that is the last of my first batch. I'm glad I decided to do a batch as i think it's given me enough time to get into a rhythm with each facet of the process.

I seem to have sorted the etching now. I'm not completely happy with it as there is ghosting around the letters but it's something that will probably get better with practice. I tried a light buff on a few of them but it ripped out most of the black leading me to think the etch itself isn't deep enough. It worked great on the milling cutters i was practicing on so it seems stainless doesn't etch as deep as carbon steel with the same settings. I don't know if i should be upping the power or doing more repetitions? Time will tell.

Now my second batch includes my first attempt at a double ground blade. So far so good. It's very exciting!

More knives

Hi Steve, more pics as promised, here is one of of my latest.

http://www.knifenetwork.com/forum/pi...pictureid=2531

Pig hunting/sticking is very popular where I live so i did the double ground blade with a simplified handle with that purpose in mind.

Had so much fun with the double grind, I'm doing another one at the moment as a 7" fighter.

Cheers,
Steve
