Grinder in a Box build
New to knifemaking and am going to build Grinder in a Box. Plan on flat grinding so I was wondering if I needed a 8" contact wheel? Could I use a 2" and 3" contact wheels on the flat platen? Would these wheels allow me to do the same on blade profiling as a big contact wheel. Any advice that would help in keeping cost to a minimal . I also plan on getting a small wheel attachment. What wheels should I get for this?

An 8" or 10" wheel is handy to have for some things but primarily it is for hollow grinding. Since you plan to flat grind you can postpone getting a large contact wheel until it fits your budget. The 2 and 3" or 4" wheels will work fine on your platen. Small wheels are usually 1/2" which I find most useful. Small wheels usually don't exceed 1", mostly it depends on how you plan to use it. You can use any wheel size you want for any of these applications so long as they match what you want to accomplish....
