You guys are right: There are only 48 different hilt, handle, shaping, sheath combinations for a "Model #16-7" "Special Fighter"!! I guess that's not enough. Seriously: I count over 40 right quick like (as my uncle used to say). Maybe more!!
A Model #14 might be a little heavier than some of the others, but I will bet ya', depending on the hardware, it isn't any heavier than Model #1-8". Remember the original idea of this thread. "Combat situation"..."self defense"...etc. I know that we can get a huge debate going on weight/ vs. carrying ability, but...let's keep it simple on this one: What do you feel would be the "BEST" Randall "FIGHTER"? At another time, perhaps we will "build" a survival knife. That thread might carry a great deal more weight (get it?...WEIGHT?) over the size and mass questions. Here I want you guys to picture a Randall knife that feels good in your hand, balances best for you, and in general fits the bill as the best Randall fighter for "you". If there is not a whole lot of options available...Oh well: Shorter threads and a quicker order.
Food for thought folks: Many, many Randall models have been carried in combat. We have heard about 6 thus far..plenty of time..Off to Jax. Play nice: Best, Captain Chris Stanaback

I am thinking less combat and more self-defense here. I am leaning towards a Model 12, Bowie. I have definite ideas about a length as well but I'll leave that for stage 2 if the Bowie makes it (fat chance.)

Just to throw a few spanners in the works

A 3-7 with the top bevel sharpened is the basic idea for the recon

A 4-7 would also be worth consideration

The options are many and varied

Since the only kind of combat I've ever experienced is of the street fighting kind (you know, testosterone-driven stupidity quickly degenerates into mortal danger), I have to go with something easy to carry/stow in the car, yet big enough to be recognized for what it is, but without being too big to stash when the law arrives.

I'm thinkin' #8.....that sharpened top bevel might be useful.....

I'm going to nominate the Non-Catalog "Combat Companion." I don't have one...but would like one. So here's hoping I'll end up with the winning number and have a chance to buy one w/o a lengthy wait.

Cool

A fighter is not a survival knife.

A fighter is not used for camp duty.

A fighter is to kill and survive.

A fighter must be easy to carry.

A fighter must be very comfortable, balanced, and quick in the hand.

A fighter must be able to cut in assorted "graps", not limited to one grip.

A fighter must have a razor sharp edge.

My vote: model 1 in a 6, 7, or 8 inch blade. My choice would be Seven inches, .....more later.

The model 14 is the perfect defense knife. Great handling and weight. It's what I carry on my combat gear.

A 1-7! Big enough to do the job, yet not unweildy. This model has also stood the test of time and events.

I love the look and feel of Number 1's, That is the model I own the most of. An 8" would be good.
