"W" Pattern Damascus Integral Bird and Trout
Hi all,
Just got this one back from Sandy Morrissey. He did a fine job dressing this one. I did a WIP on this one and here is a link if you missed it, Click Here----> Damascus Integral Bird and Trout WIP This blade was forged from a very compressed "W" pattern. I started by making a 208 layer billet I then turned it 90 degrees and cut and stacked it to 2048 layers. Scales are Sambar Stag from Chuck Bybee at Alpha Knife supply with peened stainless steel pins. Blade is 3 9/16" to the plunge cut, the blade width is 15/16", the blade at the bolster is 1/8 thick and has a lot of distal taper, Overall length is 8 1/4". Took a few quick pictures, will take a few more over the next few days and will add a few here maybe tomorrow. Hope you all like it. Last edited by Mike Turner; 10-30-2010 at 04:10 AM. |

Thanks Jim for the comments on both threads. What do you find appealing about the pic in the photography forum?

To me it has that moody, haunting look. It just begs to be picked up and used. Just me!!??

Thanks Jim for the reply, that is basically what I was looking for is a very moody light and to bring out the textures in the knife.

The question I have is where is your 400 layers? And what steel are you using? If it is on the end of your bar it will get washed out. Also if you use steels that are similar in contrast you will loose the pattern to. On this knife you are looking at the 2048 layers.
Look at this pic then go look at the knife you will see this was the face of the billet that became the face of the blade and bolster. Also forging the blade from this block opened the pattern up. Had another thought what is you finishing and etching procedure? |

Did you make the sheath? I have those same stamps, just never thought of using them in that pattern. Very nice knife too!.. Jon

Hi Jon the sheath is made by the master Sandy Morrissey, he does outstanding work and has been making sheaths for 65 years I think he said. You can find him here in the sheath forum he is a mod.
