Hot File???

good morning all,

I was watching Modern Masters last night (got to love TIVO) and I saw a blacksmith do some hot filing with a rasp. Just wanted to know if any bladesmiths are doing this when forge welding and if so what kind of rasp are you using.

Just thought it would be a lot easier than waiting for it to cool them cleaning up the surface to reweld.

Mike

Michael, I think most here use a wire brush but got to admit I've never tried hot filing but if I was going to do it I use something that wasn't much good to see how it works. Gene may be able to give you more information but doen't seem like many are around the forum today.

Yep Mongo, dull files and rasps. New ones have a tendancy to bite in the hot piece, then your hand slips forward and sizzle, sizzle. I keep hot files seperate from other files.

Hot rasping is ideal for rounding off the scarf left by hot cutting.

I use an old dull hoof rasp and a hand crank bench mounted grindstone for hot work. I've found that both work well on hot steel all the way down to a black heat. I keep a hoof rasp handy in the knife shop too for quick rasping on handle material and it works pretty good for early shaping of handle material after the glue sets up. Knocking off that epoxy saves my belts from getting clogged up when the epoxy is still a little green.

Hey Mike, nice to hear from you again. I use old, worn out files for hot filing when I'm forging, but usually just for touch-ups and burr removal. And like C.M. said...."Don't slip," or like Gene Chapman said, "Sizzle, sizzle." Been there and done that. Skin will forge weld to red hot steel.

I use a rasp sometimes but my favorite hot file is a 4-1/2" B&D

You can use that at a red heat no problemo.

A old round chain saw file works for me in and around those tight spots, hot work of course.
