Drilling straight holes for narrow tang. Help!

Trying a narrow tang knife out of 1/8" stock for the first time, and having all sorts of trouble getting a straight hole through the thing. Any advice? I've tried it in my drill press and by hand, and the best I've done is a hole 1/4"+ out of true.

Thanks!
Jeff

If your drill press is level and you make sure the block is level in the vice and use a self centering drill bit to start your hole (then change bits to size you want) the hole should be straight. The key is to use a small level and check all sides of the block and the bit. Hope this helps.

Hi Jeff:

I have the same problem. Do a search on drilling tang holes and you will find lots of good tips. A lot of the info was meant to help me. There are great guys on this forum. Their advise helped me alot. I think drilling a perfect hidden tang hole is very difficult.

Don't drill it too wide. Also look into drilling a guide hole and burning in your handle block.

I still screw up some, but that is just me.

Hi Jeff:

I just used a method that is new to me, on a hidden tang handle. I drilled a 3/16" guide hole in the center of the block and burned the handle on.

I've read about this process, but this was my first try. It came out a very nice tight form fitting hole. No messing with files, saws and stuff as usual.

Used my propane torch. Lots of smoke, but I could feel the handle block burning on and guide it some. Had to push down hard.
