Just got this in my E-mail inbox:

Dear leatherbender,

Someone has tried to log into your account on The Knife Network Forums : Knife Making Discussions with an incorrect password at least 5 times. This person has been prevented from attempting to login to your account for the next 15 minutes.

The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address: 52.17.114.36

All the best,

Is this a current member trying to hack my account? Or a spammer/troll? Or......

I am a moderator at several other forums and have been able to track these people down, can y'all let me know if, besides updating my password, there is anything you can do?

I just had this happen to my account as well. I put the IP in an ip tracker website and it originated in China. Strange.

Guys,

We get an automatic e-mail when this occurs. Our system is set up to block the ip address on 5 failed attempts for 15 minutes. By default, we track the ip and ban it permanently when we track it to a different location than the user/member historically logs in from. There is nothing in the world that can be done more to prevent it, as anyone can look for usernames and attempt to crack weak passwords via the login. You would be surprised at how many folks use "password" for their password, etc. I've recommended since day one that users choose a password that is relatively difficult to crack. Using a combination of upper, lower, number, symbol type of passwords will stop 99.9999999999 percent of this from ever affecting you directly. They are doing it in the first place because we do not allow new, unapproved members to post links and images in their initial posts. It's hard to advertise a spam site when you can't post a link or image. What amazes me is that they have time to sit around and try this lame stuff.

If you guys need me quickly, please PM me at any time.

Alex
