Bones, I haven't done a heat treat with 1084 yet, but I know it's fairly easy. Most of the commercial places I've looked at only do HT on air quenching steels, but you may be able to make a deal with someone on here to help you get it done, a lot of guys use 1084

Thanks redstick? mr. Rogers suggeted i use the 1084 because its easier to work with. I was making knives out of the big ole sawmill blades but they don't seem to hold an edge for very long. well that's why im here to learn from the ones who know what they are doing

Bones,

I did suggest 1084 but I also said it was the best choice if you were going to do your own heat treatment. Hopefully, you will consider doing your own if it is at all possible for you. A small forge is cheap and easy to build if you are in a place where you can use a forge and it makes heat treating simple steels pretty easy. A good heat treatment is what will make your blades hold their edge better.

If you can't do your own heat treat then 440C stainless is a better choice because it is easy and cheap to get a single blade treated.

If you do want to send out the 1084 blades then check Peter's Heat Treating. He will do single blades but it costs a bit ...

Try contacting Darrin Sanders (318 765 2800, darrinsanders8666 @ gmail.com), he said this in another forum:
"I've decided to start heat treating blades again. This is mainly to help hobbist makers who don't have the equipment to do it themselves. If you're doing large batches you're better off sending them to Peters, Bos, etc. but if you're just doing a few blades I may be able to save you a few bucks. I will be doing oil hardening steels only and nothing over 12" total length. Pricing will be $10 per blade + $10 return shipping. For example, 3 blades will be a total of $40. Mixed batches are fine and do NOT cost extra. The only payment I will accept is cash. As far as turnaround, anything recieved by Noon on Saturday will be back in the mail on the following Monday. I will only use USPS for return shipping.
Your blades will be done one at a time in a computer controlled electric furnace and will be quenched in a commercial quenchant with the proper quench speed for your specific steel type. In short, I will treat your blades exactly like I treat my own. I also have a hardness tester to insure hardness within 1 point on the Rockwell C scale. "
