Stainless and Ferric Chloride

I'm working on a knife that is 1075 and will have a 440C slotted guard. I'm planning on etching with Ferric. I'm not entirely sure what the impact will be on the guard. Ideally, I'd like it darkened as well, but I thought I'd throw it out to the masters out for some direction.

Thanks,
Dan
