Big Bear Bowies of the Modern RMK Era
Hi folks!
I'm sure we would all like to see your "modern" Big Bear Bowies, namely those crafted from 1990 to the present. Please feel free to share your beauties on this thread. I'll start off with a teaser and will follow up later with detailed photos and information on my four unique #12-8s. Here we go: Until I get my act together, you're most welcome to show us yours. Cheers! David __________________ It takes less effort to smile than to frown ! |

I'm a HUGE fan of Crown Stag, especially on Model 12's!

OK David
What's the significance of the L R on the back of your sheath? Regards, Samg |

Firstly to 505Gibbs: CONGRATULATIONS on successfully posting your first photos.
And what terrific photos they are showing an impressive piece of crown stag on that Big Bear! To Sam: Good question. The R on the sheath means it's a replacement of the original and the L stands for left handed. The reason for this replacement was to enable a scrim on the handle to be seen when the knife is sheathed. This, because the scrim was done on the trademark side. The black sheath also matches the natural handle material. Don't worry folks, all will be revealed when I show you the scrim.... maybe tomorrow... Cheers! I won't tease you folks any longer.
I obtained this Big Bear Bowie in 2003 when my dear late wife and I (both cat lovers of all felines large and small) fell in love with the scrim. It's a Snow Leopard scrimmed on the horn of a Water Buffalo handle by very talented Rick "HutcH" Hutchings of Crestwood, Kentucky. You can read all about Hutch here: http://www.cartertown.com/Knives/Hutch/Hutch.htm So without further ado, here's the knife: You can see in the above photo why the sheath was replaced with a lefty. The eBay seller was the one who ordered the knife from RMK and commissioned the scrim from HutcH. Here are his photos: I hope you like this knife as much as I still do. It should be noted that Randall no longer accepts Water Buffalo horn for handles on their knives. I believe the reason is the difficulty working with this material. Cheers! David P.S. I'm looking forward to seeing your Big Bears, so I'll wait for awhile before I show you who's in the rest of my lair. __________________ It takes less effort to smile than to frown ! |

That is an awesome Bear Bowie David!
If the horn is hard to work with for the shop, I wonder how difficult it is to scrim? I see a corner of a sheath in the sellers pic, is that the lefty sheath? Or did you order it from Sullivans? Great idea. The black handle with the brass hardware, outstanding look. The scrim is well done as well. Beautiful knife, or should I say, work of art. Was that an auction on eBay, or were you fortunate to see it just after it was listed buy it now, and snatched it up? Regards, Samg |

Hi Sam!
Thanks for your comments and questions. I'm glad you like the knife. I did win it in an auction. If I remember correctly, I was pleased that I didn't have to pay what I bid. It was the seller who ordered the lefty replacement sheath. You can see it along with the knife in the 7th photo. As far as being hard to scrim, perhaps our own Rick Bowles could tell us if he ever scrimmed on Water Buffalo horn. Cheers! David __________________ It takes less effort to smile than to frown ! |

Moosie David that is an absolutely stunning Randall. Those Bowies usually don't appeal to me but that one is unique. It is a beauty.

I don't know if I had ever seen a Randall with Water Buffalo Horn as handle material. It is beautiful stuff. I will look for one now.
