Cap,
Sorry I missed your wake up call. You're spot on as far as the history. The oldest (and coolest) model 5 I have EVER seen is one of Rhett's that he posted not too long ago. I hope he doesn't mind that I use his pic. Note the early stag handle top butt chamfer, the early large radius choil and the black button weak side carry Heiser. They just don't get much earlier or nicer condition than this one! There is some history that goes along with this one and maybe Rhett can relate this. Best, Ron |

Here's an older carbon #5-5 that was a #5-6. Blade was in terrible shape and the leather handle had rotted clean off. Shop saved it by making it a 5" and putting on a stag handle with a nickel silver butt cap. The sheath is a modern replacement. Not correct for the knife.
And here's a carbon ivory and brass older #5-7 with exposed nut: Regards, Doug Last edited by silverknife; 10-26-2006 at 12:31 PM. Reason: mistake in descriptiom |

Model 5's
Hello all
I have not been very active reading or posting here. Too many things on the go, I guess!!!!! Pictures: I am not even a basic photographer, but I try, albeit unsuccessful. But here are few of my Model 5's. My folks told me not brag, so I won't show all of them. 5's are my favorite's.....so much so I have given some thoughts of selling all the rest and buying 5's only. Then I gave my head a shake....... In fact I have taken a liking to wood handled knives. I think that comes from my association with some guy who makes pretty nice sheaths, whose name is Greg. Got one olive wood handled 5 and will get a ebony wooded one when we get to Florida in a few months. The pics: I will try once or twice to post these and if all else fails, send them to Moosehead for posting. Last edited by clk; 10-29-2006 at 09:30 AM. |

trying again
Got all the pics I wanted attached and two were too big. Then I did know what to do, so I paniced, as usual.
Trying again........... It seems to have worked, wonders never cease. The knives are, I have to describe them, my photography is so poor...... 1. Ivory handled 5 inch 2. Leather handles separate S 3. Old brown micarta separate S 4. Black micarta separate S Last edited by clk; 06-04-2008 at 09:16 AM. |

I am just about there with Model 3's. I can't tell you how painful it has been to sell some of the others. You do what you have to when the time comes. I hope you never get there. Best, Ron |

I hardly ever look at any of my knives other than 5's. They non model 5's are definitely safe queens. But a few years ago I decided I wanted every model in the catalogue, 1-27. Got those, then didn't know what to do. Thought about it for a long time, then decided on sticking with 5's. It is not a monetary thing, just lack of use of the non 5's, taking up space and other bigger desires (5's). But I will keep all that I have, except a couple I have in tool steel. I know you use "bore socks" and Perry suggested Bartisol (sp), but I am not in love with tool steel. I have had two rust and have had them RMK refurbished. Tool steel isn't worth it to me. I had Ren wax on the knives, dehumidifer running in the room, with heat as well, but still a bit of rust appeared. That IRKED me to no end. So I will stay with what I have and keep looking for a 5 or maybe two. My yearly orders, will be fancy or unique handled 5's. Thinking of narwhal tusk for my next handle material. Any thoughts on that? Keep well Rod |
