wood handles

Im having a problem with chipping out wood handles for through tang knives...every one Ive tried so far has ended up cracking. Is there an easier way to do this that i havent heard of? Maybe a better way to saw between the holes? Thanks, Ken:confused:

welcome to ckd, ken.

maybe this terry primos tutorial will help you.

if you are just trying to get a hole all the way through a block, special long bits like these and a drill press will help.

We carry a drill that has a rasp built into it along it's shank. You drill two holes and the rasp cuts out the web left between them

We've sold hundreds of these, they work great.

I use a technique I learned from Jim Hrisoulas. First I drill through the block with a bit to match the size of threaded rod I welded on the tang. I then rap the blade in a moist towel, clamp it in a vise, heat the tang with a torch (the moist towel prevents heat migration into the blade). I then push the handle core on to the tang and burn the hole to a tight fit. The tang and ricaso don't need to get any hotter then they do when soldering a guard.
