I think I have been messing up

I thing I have been messing up on my flat grinds. I watched some videos that show the "rolling" the top across the platen. I have been getting my angle I need and then dragging it straight across the Platen. I continue to do that until my grind line get to where I want it to be. Am I right or wrong on the way I am doing it?

I've never heard of rolling the top. Perhaps thats for a flat/convex combination.

Do your blade tips end up thinner than you would like? That's what rolling is intended to prevent. As I said earlier, if it works for you - if you like the results you get now - then you're fine doing it the way you do now ...

I'm not sure what rolling the tip means exactly. I know it can become rounded if I've got a belt that flaps like crazy

I take by rolling the tip you mean dropping the handle to follow the curve of the end of the blade. I find that it works for me to keep the tip from getting too thick. But it's not a matter of what's right or wrong, it's what works for me on a given knife. It's a nice tool to have in the kit but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
