The first KITH submission is already in, you can see the KITH page at
http://www.rayrogers.com/kith_kitchen.htm There's still no hurry, the KITH runs until April 15. When you are ready, lay out your picture similar to this one: plain background with a ruler in the picture and email it to me with your name and a description of the knife..... |

So I got my 440c in the other day and had some spare time today and got a blank drilled and ground out ready for ht. my question now is is a 80 grit belt finish enough on a kitchen knife? I mainly ask because I see it used on other types of knives and it seems to work fine sanitary wise. Anyways hoping to send this batch off all at once have about 5 or 6 ready to be finished and given away. Thanks for any input.

80 grit before HT you mean? I'd go 220. For the finished knife you'll want at least a 400 grit finish and you'll find it considerably more difficult to remove deep scratches from hardened 440 than from 1084 so you want to do more of your finish sanding befer the HT ....

Too cold...
Anyone else have and unheated, uninsulated work space?
To make the HT worth it I'm doing a couple batches of carbon/stainless, forged/removal, traditional/contemporary, eastern/western but got a little frostbite on the nose a couple weeks ago and haven't been out since. |

I was in my shop a few minutes ago, only 11 F in there right now. That's still better than the -9 F outside (it has warmed up today from -15F). There's an electric heater in there that should be able to get the place up to about 35 F but it is much more comfortable in the cabin so that's where I'm staying until winter lightens up a little ...

Its been a tad cool in Vermont lately ,
My shop is a barn I built about 20 years ago , using nothing but my chainsaw and a Haddon Lumbermaker . Its cold for me , but mostly I worry about my tools . The drill press needs a couple of spins by hand to get going . The other day I tried using an icicle as a push stick .Fluids dont work properly (I.E. lube does'nt flow to bearings ,epoxy never cures )I'mafraid everything is going to crack. I welcome the heat generated by grinding .I literally warm my hands on the blade while grinding . Normally I dont notice how cold I've gotten until I "step" inside (by trudging through the snow ,crossing a ricketty 150' foot bridge across the river ,) Then I notice I've spent like four hours out there and it flew by like seconds . |

Take a picture with the knife on a plain background and a ruler in the picture. Email the picture to me along with a description of the materials used and I'll post it on the KITH webpage. The first KITH submission is already in, you can see the KITH page at http://www.rayrogers.com/kith_kitchen.htm to get an idea of how the picture should look.
The new owner won't be determined until after April 15th and the voting is done. Details on how the exchange will be made will come with the voting process... |
