The 50 Minute Knife

So I've been thinking about getting a video camera. We talked about the idea of a 50 minute knife and its become a joking point. But I'm curious about really doing it. There is no real practical purpose, I encourage people to take their time, but its FUN

Can anyone help me think of the requirements for such a challenge? For example, at what point does the clock start, what all is required, etc? Thanks in advance

Actually, I think it could be done with torch tempering and a para-cord handle. The time should start when you pick up the steel. Years ago I tempered gravers with a torch, but never a knife.

BTW, of course you're going to make a sheath also in the same 50 minutes.

Sheath work is for do do brains

I'm wondering if I should have everything laid out, or if that 50 minutes includes cutting sandpaper, two brick forge preheated, etc.

Paracord? Pa-lease! I can do better than that! And its going to have a hand sanded finish too!

I guessed I probably wasn't the first. Took him 68 minutes. I'm confident I can do it in 50. Plus I am going to make a big knife, 6"ish blade, hand rubbed finish with hamon.

Too ambitious?

It should be a contest. Give an even hour for a complete knife and see who make sthe best one.

Have yall heard of the Battle of the Bladesmiths they have at some of the hammer ins. Last year at Tanny Hill in Alabama they gave 4 bladesmiths 2 hours to make a complete knife. They forged, tempered, ground, put on handles and completed the knives. Joe Keeslar completed his in around an hour and eleven mintues. They let the crowd vote on the knives. Ray Kirk won with an integral. I think it took him an hour and thirty something minutes. It was fun to watch.
