That's a good idea for everyone. Maybe roll the dice and step away from the comfort zone a little bit. Me, I'm comfortable making crappy knives, so I'm gonna try to make something decent this time.

Absolutely not. Looking forward to seeing what you have up your sleeve!

I guess since the KITH ends before I have a chance to flunk the JS test I will still technically be a newbie, so I will jump in again this year. The hunter that I did for the last one was actually the first knife that I ever allowed to go out into public after destroying or hiding as many as 80 previous attempts. It is still in my website gallery and doesn't look that out of place, but will soon be kicked to the curb when I get some more pro photos...lol. Assuming that I pass the JS performance test with Bailey Bradshaw in January, I will be making 15-20 knives between now and the end of May in order to come up with 5 that are near perfect, so I should have plenty to choose from.

After seeing some of the galleries of the newbies I think I need to reclassify myself as intro newbie or wannabe newbie.

I'm with you. If you haven't done one of these before it's a good experience. It forces you to make the best piece you can, then when you get one in return, it helps to hold and inspect it, to see where you could've done better. I have ALWAYS gotten better than I've given, but seeing in real life what guys are doing helps my product advance.

This is one way that we can learn to make knives without being in a vaccuum. It's one thing to read everything we can in books or online. It's another to hold a well-made custom knife in your hand. If you can do it, get out to a show where custom knives are displayed. I've met with some local makers at one of the area gun shows. One of these days I just need to force myself to go to the Ohio Classic.

Suicycle, longhunter, and Kostoglotov,

I'll sign you up on the other thread.

Welcome Kostoglotov to the Knife Network! Come check out the forums and ask questions if you have any. Or, if you have pics of some of the knives you've made we'd love to see those too!

Nate,

You should probably ask Ray to lock this thread after you put in a final post directing everyone to a the thread in the Custom Projects forum.

It's getting cumbersome to have two active threads going--hard to keep up with.

My two bits...
