Acid Etch Damascus
I have a AG Russell Gentlemen knife with a Damascus blade. The blade has little definition, almost none on one side. I have some muriatic acid; would it help bring out the patten if I brushed the acid on the blade for a few minutes, then washed it off. If so, how long should I leave it on; other suggestions welcomed.
Thanks, Don |

To begin with, if you're going to use the muriatic at all, you'll need to dilute it in water, preferably distilled. Different guys prefer different strengths, but the solution should be at least one part acid to 1 part water (I use 2 parts water).
Just brushing it on will do something, but not much. You probably need to immerse it in the solution for a few minutes...maybe longer depending on your personal preference as to how deep you want the etch. You can experiment by starting out with just a minute or two...and then go from there. Because I prefer a more diluted solution (I think it yields a cleaner etch), and because I like a deep etch, it's not unusual for me to etch for 15-20 minutes...done in 4-5 minute "bursts"... I rinse it off after every burst to see how it looks and if needed it'll go back in for another 4-5 minutes. Good luck! Dennis Greenbaum |

Dennis:
Thank you for your post; I will try your method over the week-end. I've had the little knife for years and really like it; the lack of patten never brothered me until I messed up and joined this forum and have seen all the pics of Damascus knives you guys post! Thanks again. D |

Bill, I think you might have it backwards. What I remember is someone saying, "Do it like you oughter - add the acid to the water."

Somthing else to consider, If the knofe has a guard, it should be protected with a resist, and the handle should be protected as well.
