Johan,

I'm sure you are just trying to help but would you please shut down your forum on Paltalk or at least change the name?

Your forum is set up as a written text forum only and the forum that I have been trying to organize is a voice chat forum. The Newbies who have been planning to get together on this forum later today are expecting to talk verbally to each other and to the forum moderators.

Your co-operation would be appreciated.....

i have been trying Steve's paltalk chat for the last week .i have found paltalk to be basically the same as other voice chats the last 5 years.the software itself is a resource hog, many people are losing the voice part of the chat after an hour and need to reboot their computers. various people's microphones have a high static background and the volume between people can range to a 50% difference in speakers. those of us who have hearing problems may just not hear the conversation,i probably missed 40% of the questions pointed at me last night.if i seem like i am ignoriong people.......type it out .

Thanks, Johan.

Shakudo,

I agree. Originally I wanted to use MS Messenger because the voice quality seems to be better than Paltalk. But, in order to have a group chat on Messenger it appears that each participant must subscribe to the service and that did not seem practical.

I think part of Paltalk's problem is that they are sending those banner ads through while you're trying to talk. If you have some good ad blocking software available it can help a lot with that. My dial up connection is only 19,200 baud so I don't have a lot of nabdwidth to spare. Last year on Steve's forum I had lots of trouble talking and hearing people. But, i now have an ad blocker and when I tried Steve's forum last week it was great.

For some it will work fine and for others it will just be a pain. Hopefully, there will be more good than bad. If this doen't work out, I'm open to suggestions for other venues as long as it supports voice. If it does work, maybe we can all go bug Steve in a week or two ....

Ray, have you checked this voice chat out?
It's supposed to be the best of it's kind, but I have no experience with it.

Sorry Mr.Rogers, no matter what I did the site would not load a sign up page. So I could not even try to sign up. I took off my fire wall and lowered my security but the sign up page never came up.
I tried six times all weekend.

That's too bad, Howard, we would have enjoyed your company. Paltalk works well for me for the last two years, and though I've had few problems, I know that other people have had nightmares.

I would say keep trying, and if need be we'll talk more about this via PM or email. I'll be happy to help. I went to the Paltalk site just now and the signup came up immediately.

MIke,

Haven't heard of that but I will check it out.

Howard,

Sorry you had difficulty and hopefully Fitz can help you get it worked out. This stuff is all free software so I guess we can't expect it to be totally reliable.

I think the meeting came off very well. I was online for 8 hours and there were many people still there when my computer crashed at 10 pm and I called it a night. Don Cowles was there (thanks Don!), and Shakudo, and Hammerdown now, and a few others whose tags I recognized as well as many new ones. At any given moment there were at least a dozen people there. The old standbys like Fitz and Bowie were online most of the night and Steve Pryor came over from his forum and eventually rescued us from some moronic heckler. Later, Tracy Dotson and Alan Blade showed up. Ed Caffrey was on hand and started a spirited discussion on how knives should be priced.

For the most part, I think the voice quality was very good and the conversation lively and informative. From time to time I may try to organize another Newbies Forum on Paltalk to encourage some of the new guys to get their feet wet. Until then, I urge you all to vist Steve's forum , called A Custom Knifemaker's Forum I believe, on Paltalk. That forum is under the Miscellaneous Group and is open all the time. Most of these same people hang out there pretty much every night.

My thanks and appreciation to everyone who participated and helped to make our little event a success............

Sorry that I missed the chat! It sounds like it was fun and informative. My ISP said that the web has been loaded and the phone line companys are in to mess so dial up is having problems.
It seems like we are becomming a third world contry fast!
Are you going to do it again?
I will stay up late some night and load the program if you are.
Howard

I don't plan to host another forum right away but I'd be happy to meet you anytime one Steve's forum. Also, I have MSN Messenger which supports voice chats limited to two people. If you already have that loaded, we could use that. The down side is that all the other guys wouldn't be there but it's a start ....

I'm not sure this thread really needs to be a Sticky, Roc, but I will take the opportunity you have provided to invite anyone who hasn't already done so to come join us on A Custom Knifemakers Chat Room - under Miscelleaneous Groups - on Paltalk, any time. We are there every night and everyone is welcome .....
