It's not terribly high for O-1 to do local pickup, but it's a lot of money for 3' of steel, imho. This is the reason I suggested a 10xx series steel. If you ordered it from admiral, you could get a 5' bar of 1080 in those dimensions for $21.66, a 3' bar of 1095 form Admiral will cost you $15.08. The shipping is not expensive. If you could stand to use 1.5" stock, you could order 20' of 3/16" bar from Kelly for less than your 3' of O-1 and he'll ship it for free.

I wouldn't spend so much money on one bar of steel just starting out. I'd order $50 worth of steel from Kelly or Admiral, in various sizes, so you have more options and more steel to work with.

The search button will tell you all about different steels and places to buy them. Check their prices and compare to the ones you're quoted. Good luck with your first knives.

Admiral steel has O-1 1 1/2X 3/16X36" for approx $38 and their shipping isn't that much. Personally I'd pick some 10XX series steel or some 5160 to learn on. I'd much rather mess up a $1 piece of steel than a $5 piece of steel and, while you're learning, you are going to mess up a bunch of steel. Kelly Cupples has steel cheaper than Admiral and, if you order at least $50 worth, shipping is free. Just my 2 cents worth.

The price on the O-1 is about right.Admiral doesn't carry 3/16X2 but they do carry 3/16X1 1/2 at $38.60 for 3'.
I do agree with Cap on useing Cheaper steel to start.
Just a little advice.start with smaller blades and work up.Take twice as much time as you think you should, pay attention to the details. That Awsome big bowie will come.
I still look at my first knife and laugh it wasn't good. But I still get a happy feeling when I look at it.It hangs in a special place in my shop.Be patiant this is a never ending learning curve. It will also give you years of enjoyment.and a pride in your craft.
