Confederate D-guard Bowie
I got big into blackpowder artillery over the last year and had lots of advice and hands-on help from a good friend. As a way to say thanks I offered to make him a knife since he carried around a pakistani el-cheapo bowie-knife-like-object. He said "anything you want, just not too shiny. Just something small and simple and kinda well-used looking." I knew he really wanted a D-guard since he's been hinting at it for quite a while. Here's what I came up with.
It's a 5160 differentially heat-treated blade and measures about 6" from hilt to tip. Handle is axis stag with a spacer of South TX wood. Guard was made from 14 ga 1050 sheet and heat treated, etched and buffed slightly. The inside of the guard was left "in the black" from the heat treat. He was surprised to get it, as he was expecting a much smaller, simpler knife. I think the gift knives are some of my favorites to do. As nice as it is to sell something, it's nicer to see the smile on a friend's face and to watch them sit and mess with it like a little kid at Christmas! We did do a little horse-trading for it...I needed a couple pounds of black powder for the weekend's activities! |
