Flat Grinding Video: Making a Chef's Knife
My second video has recently finished a little field testing and I have been convinced to go ahead and offer it to you now even though it is really intended to be the second volume in a two volume set. The first volume will have more of the most basic stuff on it but it won't be ready for another year and this one will stand by itself. Although I call it the Shop Built Chef's Knife the basic steps apply to any type of knife and even a raw beginner should be able to get some useful information out of it.
The video runs about four hours. I build a chef's knife from start to finish using all the tools in my shop while you basically stand next to me and watch. I tried to leave nothing out, the only time I cut anything was when I would be doing the same thing for many minutes I trimmed out some minutes. This is a full function DVD complete with an extensive menu system that allows you to return to any step you want to look at at any time. The DVD will play on a computer or on your TV with an attached DVD player. These are the steps that are covered: Drawing the profile on a piece of steel Cutting out the profile on a bandsaw and refining the profile on the grinder Flat grinding the blade (lots of detail) with attention to the proper way to start the grind Detail on how to avoid plunge cuts Refining the blade finish with finer belts Final finishing by hand How to protect the blade finish as you work on the guard and handle Milling the guard slot Fitting the guard Attaching the guard with JB Weld How to mark the handle block for drilling the tang slot Drilling the holes for the tang in the handle block Creating the slot in the handle for the tang Finding the position for the handle pin (this is a stub tang handle) Drilling the handle pin hole in the handle and in the tang The proper way to fit the pin so that the handle is held securely Rough cutting the handle to basic shape How to mix AcraGlas (tricks and techniques) Gluing the handle (and spacers) Shaping the handle on the grinder (a Coke bottle shape with a bird's head) Refining the handle shape (lots of detail here) Finishing the handle Marking the logo on the blade Sharpening Even if you don't have a shop full of equipment (yet) you should be able to get a lot of useful info out of this. If you would like a copy just Paypal $15 to knives@rayrogers.com (I ship on Tuesday and Friday). If you don't have a Paypal account email me at the same address and we'll work something out... Would be cheap at twice that price. After reading the description I fully expected to see a 50-75$ price tag. I'm in Vegas right now. But will be ordering a copy as soon as I get home.

Thanks, and I think you are right. I think the production values are well beyond what usually passes for a knife making video and the content is as thorough and complete as I could make it. Even so, I'm not really doing these videos to make money, the price I charge covers production cost and will eventually repay my outlay for the equipment I bought to make the videos. Mostly, I just want to help you knotheads get over the humps we all run into when we start this knife making insanity .... |

I have received Ray's video !! I have been able to watch it in its entirety. IMPRESSIVE !!!!!!!!!
Ray was able to explain and show the working theories of knife making from start to finish. As Ray stated, I don't have all the equipment that he was able to use throughout his video, but I was able to understand the uses and why the uses of the equipment. This video is NOT just for the beginner but for anyone interested in learning the internal workings of knife making. Ray has made this video with very comprehensive language for all skill levels. The knowledge and understanding of this video is well under priced. For the last year, I have read more books, forums, and watched videos than I have for any hobby I have ever had. Ray's video has taken all of these forms of information and made it into one GREAT video for everyone. Thank you Ray for taking your time and effort to help educate people like me in the understanding and knowledge of your skills. I also want to thank you for all your dedicated work on this forum and your Sunday night chats. Both have inspired me and others to continue our quest and journey of knife making. Again, THANK YOU RAY !!! |

How the heck did you get it so quick? Do you live in Wauconda, Washington or what?
I am certainly looking forward to receiving my copy and picking up some tips. And of course, to see if Ray actually sounds like a robot. -- JK LOL Dan |

I sent out a couple of copies to a couple guys in the Chat Room to get them tested to be sure there weren't any serious bugs I didn't know about, same as we all should do with our knives (testing, that is). There are a couple bugs I do know about but they are minor.
As for sounding like a robot, believe me, I have to fight hard not to... |

I was lucky to get my grubby little paws on this video, and I really liked it! As Troy said Ray did a great job explaining the steps and showing each step he explained. Definitely worth the money.
I liked the way he sectioned up the material into chapters, I wa asn't able to watch it in one sitting, and it also allows me to review a chapter later if I'd like to. Troy nailed this video on the head in his explanation! Good material for all levels of experience. Good stuff Ray! __________________ AT "We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And watch where the chalk-white arrows go To the place where the sidewalk ends." Shel Silverstein |

Ray,
I received your DVD today and I was able to watch up to the ferrule work so far. You provide a lot of tips in the commentary which I am finding useful. Thanks so much for putting this together. Dan |
