Latest creation and attempt at hand filing

Presented for your consideration:

File and thumb notches are all done by hand with needle files. No power tools used. Blade is 5 1/4 " AUS6 steel, handle is Red and Black Micarta with red and White spacers, and a brass thong hole. Yes it's a kit blade, sorry I still can't do my own forging.

Looks good. Nice job on the vine and thorn pattern. It was interesting the way you took it through the liner. The plunge lines look nice and crisp.

I agree with Doug. The file work through the liners looks really neat! Nice clean execution

And hey, there's nothing wrong with kit knives man. I would rather do kit knives then non at all! It still gives you great skills and hey it's fun right?

I admit I'm having a ball.

I'm very proud of the filework, esp. the thumb notches for some reason. I plan to do lots more file work, it's very relaxing.

Happy to say it already sold.

Looks cool! I agree about the filework through the spacers, very cool. You might want to dabble with filling in the filework on the handle with dyed epoxy. It adds another dimension to it, and also keeps those spaces from getting gunky.

Its great that they are selling, nothing wrong with selling kit knives, just make sure they are marketed as such.

Filing through the spacers was an idea that popped into my head when I first started filing, and I think it looks wonderful.

Since it's going to a fellow who will use it for skinning deer, I filled the gaps with clear epoxy. I do plan to dabble with colored epoxy in the future.

I didn't measure the pattern out, but just eyeballed it. I tried to measure it, and hated the result. Glad I went with my instincts.

Did you just glue the liners to the tang before you did the filework? Without liners I wonder what it would look like if the filework went into the handle scales.

Yes I did. Gave them plenty of time to dry hard, then freehanded it. Blade in my left hand, files in my right, sitting on my front porch.

Looks good!
I can't do forging at this time either but hopefully in the future.
Have you tried stock-removal yet? It can be done with a minimum of tools and very satisfying.
Also curious about a sheath... it can be difficult to find a good sheath to fit a trailing-point blade.
Keep up the good work!

Nice work man, decent pattern you got on there. How long did that take you? I've been thinking of customizing my own knives these days, my brother and my dad are pretty into their bushcraft/survival knives which is why it's sparked an interest in myself. They tend to go to where they know for knives and equipment in general if you know what I mean, like if they have a good experience with one store they'll make the effort to continue to go to the same place because it's a trusted source. They go here for Bushcraft Knives but because they've been in the business for quite a long time now they're wanting to personalize their babies. They're both quite computer illiterate (not surprising for my dad, very surprising for my brother) so I've been sent onto the world wide web to do some research!

Any tips that you can give will be appreciated :-)

I'm not in a position to do any sheath work at this time. Financial reasons. In fact, this was the last knife I'm making for a while, as I've only sold the one, and with kids and holidays coming on, it's an indulgence I cannot afford. For some reason, kids expect to eat and wear clothes and stuff..

I have considered stock removal, but again, I tread a very tight financial line, being disabled and on disability, and cannot afford the neccessary tools.

My apartment complex was reluctant to let me do what little I'm doing with kit knives and making Longbows, so....

Hopefully the new year will bring new opportunity and changes, and I'll be able to go into this a little more directly.

But I do love what I do, and I'll never give it up. I inherited a largish machete and some humongous carving/machete thing (Honestly, I've no idea what the bloody thing started life as) that I'm removing the handles form and redoing in my own twisted image. The machete has a longish blade, so to counter balance it, I plan to add a brass guard and pommel, and something interesting for handle material. Wish I could find some lime green leather washers.....

Addendum: Just sold the knife pictured for 85 dollars. Dunno if thats a good price or no.

I have some nice leather left over from a saddle I repaired. I can look and see if I have lime green dye. If you want it you would have to make your own cuts. Use and old washer or cut an oval or square then fit it to your project. PM me if your interested. I might even have lime green in the scrap bin.
