Thanks Dan I goofed when I designed the system to hold it all together so the door brick are held out about 3/8s . I could have cut a notch in them but I decided to try the fiberglass stove door seal, it seems to be working but I've only had it to 830? c. My element ended up at about 1922watts so it heats a bit slow but not bad.

I wonder if some ceramic blanket could be mortared around the face to seal it off.

I was thinking about adding argon? or nitrogen? to my oven to try to keep scale down. Is it worth the cost or effort?

I use argon. It works for me but a lot of whether or not it is successful depends on how you like to work. First, your furnace probably is not air tight so the argon will need to be constantly replenished, which means it will be in your shop. It won't hurt you to breathe it other than the fact it displaces air so you probably won't want to be in there while it is working unless you have a lot of cross ventilation.
Another thing is that it does not prevent every bit of scale. My blades scale over with a very fine ash type scale which may cover some very small pits. No problem for me as I do all my grinding after the HT is complete. So, it keeps the scale down but doesn't eliminate it ...

I grind before HT but leave enough to get rid of any pits. Seems like almost all of the scale always comes off when I quench so I don't really have a lot of clean up to do.
Thanks for the reply Ray. From the sounds of it I'll be better off to just keep doing what I'm doing after all I can only justify spending about so much on what is a hobby right now.
