2nd Fully Completed Knife

I made a few mistakes along the way on this knife, but thankfully I was able to recover

Blade: Aldo's 1084 - hand sanded and etched with ferric chloride
Handle: Stabilized Spalted Beech and brass

This is my second fully completed knife, and my first attempt with wood stabilization using Cactus Juice. Still need to make a sheath, and hope to have time this weekend for it.

All in all, I'm pleased with the outcome and would appreciate any feedback you guys might have. Also, the other pair of scales the knife is sitting on are stabilized ambrosia maple for my next knife... At the rate I make knives, it'll be ready by St Patty's Day

Hope to see you guys in the chat room this Sunday!

Knife looks great. How did you stabilize the scales?

Very cool, and like Ray said worthy of putting your name on it.

Another OOPS...

Thanks for the kind words guys - I really appreciate it!

Ernie helped me with my mark and stencils, and I picked up an etch-o-matic as well. Last night I got started on a sheath and decided I better put my mark on it. However, being a newbie, I made yet another mistake and didn't pay attention to the fact that the pad was hanging off the stencil a little bit. So, I got a nice black rectangle along with my mark. Doh! I should've taped off to protect but just didn't think about it at the time...

I thought I ruined it at first, but I didn't deep etch so I think I might be able to just re-sand the blade and re-etch my mark - but that puts me in a bit of a quandry regarding the final finish... I used ferric chloride for a nice gray satin finish, but I know as soon as I re-sand I'll be back down to bare steel on that side. I'm assuming the ferric will not be an option again since I have the handles on, so I suppose I'll just need to carefully hand sand the whole blade again and forget the ferric. Am I being overly cautious in my assumption?

I'm somewhat temped to see if I can carefully tape off the scales and liner and do brief ferric etch after sanding (brush on maybe?) and wash it right away, but I don't know how realistic of an option that is. Any advice is appreciated on this. I don't think it's bad enough to scrap, but I'm afraid to mess it up worse.

Lots of lessons learned so far, and I'm taking it in stride - trying to view my mistakes kind of like touching a hot stove... it hurts bad enough to never want to do it again!

If the scales are properly stabilized the ferric won't hurt them....

I got through it!

Re-sanded, re-etched with ferric, and etched with my name.

On to the sheath

Thanks Ray!
