Heat Treat Oven
Just finished the oven by Andy Gascoigne .
Good tutorial good infomation. I set up a digital control by Auber. Doesn't ramp, but will hold temp within 1-2 degrees of set temp. Takes 8 min to hit 1500 degrees. I think a little warm up time would be good. I calibrated my control with the K-thermocouple in a glass of ice water. I am planning on checking performance with some witness cones and temp sticks. Does anybody have a way to check temps. Thanks Andy for the great tutorial. take care TJ Smith __________________ TJ Smith Knifemaker |

I am interested in hearing about your experiences on this project. I am in the process of building a high temp oven furnace myself. What controller did you use, what elements and am wondering if this is the same tutorial I was looking at recently.

oven
OK Here's a couple pics.
I pretty much followed Andy's plan. My oven is 5" wide by 4.5 " tall by 18" long inside . My elements are the same as Andys. Used the same method to put in grooves for the elements. I am looking for ways to check out the high temperatures. Had it up to 1312 c thinking it was on F. No damage but Home Depots high temp mortor melts and bubbles at that temp. I used element wire from Seattle Pottery Supply I see someone brought up the tutorial that Andy made so just follow it and you'll be ok Take Care TJ __________________ TJ Smith Knifemaker Last edited by TJ Smith; 12-03-2006 at 07:37 PM. No door switches or lights. The controler lights up when main power is on. Then i have a seperate switch that powers the ssr relay which turns on the oven elements.

was looking at relays tonight for the elements. then I decided to go with the 12v ssr option so I can do a door switch and some type of on/off light. what type of relay did you end up using?

I bought a ssr relay from ebay its a 20 amp and takes 3-24 volts dc to power it. I bought a relay but deceided to go with a ssr because of the switching on and off. My controler is constantly switching on and off. My controler was for relays so I am powering the ssr with a external power source works great.
Well, I am going out to the shop and play with it.Got to test the temp. Take Care TJ __________________ TJ Smith Knifemaker |
