8 inch Subhilt Fighter

I just finished this one and thought i'd post. Chuck Ward too the photo. This knife has an 8 inch blade of 5160 and the handle is Green Linen Micarta. The OAL is 13. I intend to cut with this knife at Batson's before I let it go. It's supposed to be a tactical, but I call it a fighter, uh huh. Lin

8 inch Subhilt Fighter

Stephen, It is a mortised tang handle. I used 3/8 inch material and added a third layer to fill the hand a little better. I split the third layer with the bandsaw and used the halves of that to thicken the other two. This made the main joint right in the center. I did more testing today and it works very well. I chopped a Yellow Pine 2 X12 in two and it still cut the 1 inch rope and shaved hair. My testing today was as much for the handle as anything. Thanks for the comments Dan. Lin

Whoa..... would be at home as a fighter of trees!
That handle looks incredibly comfortable, and stable. You've got me interested in doing a mortised handle now...

I enjoy the mortised handles and think they are much more versitile in that they allow an almost unlimited variety in shapes and configurations. One thing that I've found (with help from the more experienced) is that if you dovetail the edges of your mortise, it allows the bonding agent to actually get a mechanical grip as well as the sticking of the material. The type of bolts or pins may enter into the equation as well. I've screwed up a few handles and tried to bust it off with a hammer and this will tell you if you got the handle attachment right or not too. Thanks, Lin

Lin, Tactical/fighter, how about just another fine knife? Wouldn't surprize me if this is the one your using for a comb.

Lin, Funny how us bald guys make fun of other blad guys. I think the last time I carried a comb was in high school. Yes I'll be at Blade. Looking forward to seeing you again.
