I think this is the color that's needed

Now I know that not everyone's monitor, lcd screen, is not calibrated the same, therefore this straw color will not appear the same one everyone's monitor. But they're probably close enough that you can get the gist of this practice knife blank.

I heated it at 425 degrees for an hour wrapped in tinfoil (thanks for the tip Eli!) turning the blade over at the 30 minute mark to try and distribute heat evenly. I thought of using sand for that too, but I forgot and it was nearing 11 AM when I started. Sorry for the bad pic, this is my laptop camera.

Could be. The way to find out is to finish the blade so that it can be sharpened, thoroughly tested, and the broken to examine the grain. If it passes all that then that must be the right color ...

Color can vary big time from residue and other things. Dont worry about color just test it.
