A.P.K. Revisited
This is my number one model that got me started in autos. The first ones back in '96 had Micarta frames and no inlays. I just thought I'd try to fancy one up a little.
The blade is mirror polished S30V, frame 60-61 aluminum, and the inlays are thuya burl. Hope you like it. Here's a shot of two of the inlays. Thanks for looking. Steve Last edited by Nifmakr; 10-31-2002 at 06:05 PM. |

very nice job, steve.
from what i've read, you must have the knack - getting a shine on s30v is supposed to be difficult, at best, let alone a mirror polish! thanx __________________ wayne things get better with age ... i'm approaching magnificent |

Steve,
Very clean! And very impressive polish job on the S30V. And the inlays are real classy. I just got some S30V from Crucible. We'll see how it handles. Bob Sigmon |

Wayne,
It is very difficult. Taking out 1200 grit scratches with 1500 grit is like polishing a 220 grind with 600 grit on 440C. It really holds on to the scratches you put into it. Like that song "Barbed Wire and Roses" "it ain't worth the pain it takes to hold it." Bob, You can't tell a whole lot of difference in the way it works, as compared to 440C until you start grinding or polishing it. It saws, drills and reams about like any other stainless, but you'll use about three times the abrasive to grind it. It just laughs at a buffer. In fact, I found that if you put any pressure at all on it, it gets those cloudy spots in the finish. One thing the buffer will do is show you the scratches you thought you had out. Then when you do finally get out the scratches, take a slightly cutting chrome compound and "three hairs and some air" and get the mirror. Steve |

Steve,
Thanks for the explaination on S30V polishing. It's nice to know that it can be done, if you have the patience. Bob Sigmon |
