That's nice to know about the "in between" carbide bits. I hadn't been able to find them before. I'll have to look into them.

Being 1080 and annealed, you're dealing with dull bits. Probably hardened your spot as described previously. Just take a torch (lp will work) and heat the tang area to cherry red then let air cool (hold with pliers until cool to touch). Center punch from other side at pin location then use a sharp bit to cut your hole. No need for expensive carbide bits for 1080 series steel that's not been HT'd.
