Custom forged forging hammers

Im posting this for my blacksmithing master in SD. He is making severl custom forging tools , mainly forging hammers but others as well. They have great balance and better rebound then any store bought hammers you can find. Any weight you like. Another person from forum has gotten 2 of the weight he wanted maybe he will give his opinion. Ill post pics soon as i figure out how

I was the one bought the hammers, a 2-pound cross-pein and a 2 pound diagonal pein.

I have only used them for one session, and used a different hammer-hold and pounding technique. I must say that they felt better in the hand than the Peddinghaus hammers I am used to. My hand didn't cramp, and my arthritic wrist wasn't essentially locked up the next day. Jack HT'd the steel himself, and the rebound is MUCH better than any other hammer I've used.

Ok, now can I have a freebie piece of wrought iron, Cowboy??

Seriously, folks, these are nice hammers. Pricey compared to the cr@p in a hardware store, but they are custom made, have the benefit of being made by someone with almost 30 years serious experience blacksmithing, and are just a cool design. The diagonal pein moves steel better than any hammer I've used for drawing.

My Centaur Forge-bought hammers are going to be pretty lonely.......

Anything custom made is pricey compared to the crap in a hardware store. I bought my first custom made hammer last year from Tom Clark of the Ozark School of Blacksmithing in Potosi, Missouri. I paid either $100 or $125 for. It's a 2.8 pounder. It was worth it to me. Great craftsmanship. Heck the face of the hammer was polished to a point that I could see myself in it.

One good thing about custom made hammers is that you tend to take a little better care of them because of the price. Sort of like most of us wouldn't use a $1,000 knife to ream out a piece of pipe.

I guess I really shouldn't have mentioned another name in the thread since this is about sdcb27's blacksmith friend. U-m-m, why don't ya'll go ahead and mention his name, and maybe a link if there is one?

I'd be interested in photos and reviews as well.

Yeah, but didn't you say I had to beg in public??

I was just out squeezin a billet and decided to try some "loose grip" rebounding experiments. A 3lb flat-faced Pedd. sledge is dead as a doornail. A 800 gram Pedd. crosspein has pretty good rebound. Jack's hammer kept flying out of my grip because it rebounds so much. I like that!!! Got my money's worth and I got the hammers before I could catch my breath from ordering em. Now ain't that a refreshing change from the "other guy"?

Thanks, Romey, I be way grateful for you're hooking me up with this.

Thanks, Chuck. I was checking sumpin for Romey.

What I could use some info about is whether the lack of a "post delete" on mine and romey's edit screen is a glitch or intentional for "registered users"?

Well I wasn't sure about it - here was a a cowpoke from Montana and a busted up ex Midwest biker going for a ride on the ole 'puter so.....
ANyway anytime you need help just give me a shout.

Mike that may very well be part of the VBulletin set up and also what you say about being just a registered user - I know it's that way on BF where I'm just registered. Shoot KNAdmin an email and ask is all I can suggest.

Chuck, I assume in your wanderings that somewhere, sometime, you had the need for trying to calm down a cowboy. We were on Paltalk, trying to work out his pic posting, and the frustration mounted. I would suspect it worked about as poorly for you, too!

Makes sense, Chuck, about the delete option.. Over on BF I paid for a knifemaker subscription, and I have the "delete" box over there.

Guess I'll ask the question on whether a "General membership" will give the "delete" option.

BTW, do you mean I'm not a biker anymore??? I still have a Harley shirt.......and an attitude! Already, just 8 months without a bike, I look at all them hogs very wistfully....

Mike - you can if you want to be. But then maybe like Jesse James says there's so many Rolex Bikers out there now it's time to quit building them and claiming to be one! 8o 8o
