Exploding drill press

every time you drill a hole with my delta shopcrap the parts explode inside the case

as you can see the little parts on the top of the motor come off and the other parts come off too see
as far i made a little washer that fit the drive on the motor better in hopes that the spring would not pop off but to no avail.
so i am going to have to put the whole drill press in the trash or figure out how to put a dc motor on it does anyone have any ideas or have had the same problem
what is a good drill press i broke two drill press tonight
well the pics thing will not work with ofoto.com

MSC has the 13" bench-type drill press. It's an import, but is a decent substitute for the Delta pos. In fact, its the same one that Grizzly used to sell and for some strange reason discontinued and started selling a really cheesy drill instead. The MSC part number is 09512104, and it sells for $219.00. You could probably find the same press in Harbor Freight for a little less; I haven't looked, but I also use one of their 12-speed, Central Machinery heavy-duty drills, model No. 726, and its about as good as the imports get. I put a keyless chuck on mine and I've been using it a long time now. Hope this helps.

I've heard of this before. When I was shopping for a new press I was searching through online reviews. I read a review on one of the Delta presses and the guy described the exact same condition. It was months ago and I don't remember the details, but I do remember that the guy fabricated something to fix it. You might be able to find his posts by doing google searches.

The photo thing was messed up i think it is the image hosting site i am using. i think what i am going to do is buy a used industrial machine. I dont like the delta at all. It is about 5 to 7 thousandths off witch is not good when you are trying to line everything up. I think i might get a POWERMATIC 20 IN. every one i have talked to says they are a good drill and they have nice and large tables if i got a free standing one then i could free up some bench space. I dont think you could get the delta to drill butter without it exploding. I know how i think i will fix it what i will do it thread the end of the motor shaft that way with a nut on the end of it it will not come off and add a washer at the pully so it does not fall apart. but once i add all that i will have to make the spring shorter. good thing i bought that torch. But i make about a knife a day and that delta thing just will not do. my 35$ harbor freight drill press work better than the delta. I want a mill to but i think it would suck to have a mill drill you would have to set it up all the time. I think i will get a standing POWERMATIC 20 IN. unless some one knows a better deal in the 1000$ dollar range. If all my tools would work as well as my KMG1 i would be happy. If any one has a converted to dc drill press let me know.

Not hard to do, Yend, but not smart if all you use it for is drilling. DC does not have the torque-output that a similar motor would have in AC. In other words, you'll spend a lot of cash for nothing.

Now on the other hand, maybe you could make that machine a dedicated unit to do say... countersinking? Engine-turning? If you pick a set of pulleys to do a specific series of drills then you'll be fine - you'll never need another speed change. Lots of makers just set their presses on the lowest speed and go from there. Its not entirely advised from the standpoint of what machine speeds and feed rates are for a specific size drill, but it gets a lot of makers down the road without having to worry about all that stuff. As long as it pokes holes in metal a lot of makers are satisfied enough!

So I guess what I am saying is that all is not lost. You can fix it!

Well if money is no object, then get yourself a Clausing.

Kevin: Where can you get a Maxion here in the States? If I had to spend that kind of money I would just go all the way and get a Clausing. Its probably easy for you to get support for your Maxion in Deutschland, but I've never seen one here.
