Mike, I am trying to find a private party that has one. Just trying to save some money. You know how it goes.
Thanks, Roland

Roland,

When looking for a used oven, don't forget to include pottery kilns. They are basically the same and might be easier to find.

or check into building your own

that is what I ended up doing. Much cheaper than buying one new and you can get all the parts from your local pottery house. I used Pottery House Supply (PHS) for all my parts as well as a ton of advice.

home heat treat oven

Actually the first step was to go to the library. I found a book on ceramic kilns and how to build one. Then I called the Pottery Supply House, I believe they operate in the states as well as Canada, and they helped enormously. They basically walked me through the process. The controller was by far the nost expensive part of the project but I got a good electronic programmable one. I think it cost me about $150 Cdn. Total cost on the kiln was under $300 Cdn. I would suggest you contact Pottery Supply House www.pshcanada.com and see if they can give you any leads.
Hope that helps
Steve

Steve do you remember where you bought your controller? I am in Canada also. I already have a jewellery burnout oven which goes to 2200F but it's a manual switch and if I changed to programable I could use for H/T also.
Thanks
Vince

I got it through Pottery Supply House. They have a warehouse/office somewhere in Ontario but they use the local pottery and ceramic stores as delivery shops in most towns in Canada.

Do you remember the name or model number of your controller. I went on their site and there's alot of them. If you could give me some sort of info I can call them. Is your's single stage, multi stage anything to tell them would be a great help Steve.
Thanks
Vince

The controller that I have is a MPI VT4810. It works very well but I have to admit I am probably not using it to its potential. The instructions that come with it are next to useless unless you already know how to operate it. I remember getting very frustrated with it and eventually just setting it to manual. Which is really all I need anyways.
You will probably have to call them. I explained to them what I wanted to use the kiln for and they recommended this controller. I also had to call them a couple of times to figure out how to set it up and they were extremely patient and helpful.
Hope this helps
Steve

Steve thanks for all your help. One thing though if you went to just manual maybe I should stay with the switch my oven has. It's a knob like an oven knob with settings at ;
Low/1/2/3/4/5/6/High with halfs in between each. I know the approximate temps of each one and can be fairly consistant. What do you think? Use what I have. Most steel will be Ats-34,
154 Cm and 0-1.
Thanks again
Vince

Help from anyone on this would be appreciated

Are you getting consistent results? I guess that is what matters. I like the digital because this way I know when the oven has reached the correct temperature and I can let it soak for a time after that, usually 1/2 hour. This gives me a consistent 58 rockwell after tempering using 440C. As long as you can control your heat and your soak time I am not sure what the controller would gain you but as I said above,(I editted later) I would recommend tat you give them a call and ask them. They were very helpful anytime I have called and don't sem to be the type to sell you something you don't need.
