Hi Eichler,
Bill Moran covers this topic in some detail in his tape Handles and guards. It is available on the ABS website if you are interested. I also have searched my back issues of Blade and Knives, but with no luck. Good Luck! |

Sorry, guys. I never could find that article. I know that issue is at the house somewhere, and I'll probably come across it in the future. When I do, I'll be sure to scan those pages and post them to the forums for everyone to see. Sorry.

Al Lawrence for riverside sells a jig for laying out your pattern for a fluted handle. I can't remember which supply house it is but they usually have fluted buffalo horn for sale.

Hi Jimmy,
I sent a note to Al about that jig, a link to it was posted earlier, asking whether or not it cut marked the pattern or cut the pattern as well. He didn't respond, I will try agian later. I am hoping to find a jog that will layout the pattern and hold the tool to allow for even cutting, as opposed to what happens when I free hand. Thanks, Ike |

The jig just helps you lay out the lines, you still have to file the grooves in yourself. Craftsman had a router setup a while back that would make fluted table legs, as well as reverse flutes depending on the bit used. It held the work and turned it for you. I don't think it would work for somethin small like a knife handle but it might be able to be modified. I have never seen another like and I don't know what it is called so no help there. Good luck.

Geeze,.,,,you make this sound so complicated...
Just shape your grip..lay out the area using a grease/china marker where you want the flutes to me abd use a 1/2" dia sanding drum on a flex shaft machine to cut them..takes lile 10 mins.... Use finer grits to smooth.. Hell's bells, half the time I just cut them free hand..turns out great,,, __________________ Dr Jim Hrisoulas, Author, Researcher, Swordsmith Living in the Nevada desert.
