What kind of wood are you looking for? It will help narrow it down some.

That helps try the Lumber Lady. Great service and nice wood and you'll get a great selection.

Ross, check out some of your local cabinetmakers, woodworkers, etc. You would be surprised what they throw into the waste bin.

The best deal that I have found on scale material is By Jake. When I placed my first order, and let him know that I was a beginner he threw in a few pieces for me to practice on at no charge. Great guy and great product http://jakeknife.com/

BTW I am now his web master, and just updated the web site with new product.

I'll have to second that. I'd forgoten about Jake. I guess because I haven't gotten any from him yet. But the stuff a couple of my fellow makers here have gotten has been fantastic. And the price is hard to beat.

I've pretty much settled on Jake for my stabilized woods in maple/buckeye/madrone. Pins also. Lumber lady has a great variety of different stuff also. Still have a piece of masur birch from gilmore setting on my table. I'd be careful not to go so cheap you get ugly. Any knife you build is worth putting something halfway decent on it. When I was first learning how, I'd go to the surplus builders store and buy hickory and ash axe handles cheap. Made some surprisingly nice handles out of them. Knife catalogs carry some reasonable stuff, also. Look around.

Also try e bay. A lot of woodworkers will put their scrap pieces in a bundle and sell them on e bay. I got a whole box of highly figured snakewood for a little over twelve dollars. Pretty good deal considering supplier prices nowadays.

Just search for knife scale* or knife blank*

Ebay good find

Well i have checked many of the places you folks have mentioned, and i cruised ebay and happened upon a great deal, found 21 scales, yes i said 21 scales, all grade A stuff and a wide variety of types, curly maple, cocobolo, snake wood, and many others for the low low price of $18.50. I was shocked, that will keep me playing for a good bit of time!!!

Thanks again

Ross
