OK, Finally finished 3rd knife
This started out as a DDR3 and then got modified a great deal on the handle. Please excuse the photos. They are CRAP! I took them with my Elph 110 digital, which although a great pocket camera, doesn't have Macro for those close shots.
The photos were actually taken from a distance and then cropped and zoomed using a photo editor. The flash was too weak so I also had to play with brightness and contrast just to get some detail out of it. The knife actually looks much better than the pictures. Some detail notes: Notice it doesn't realy look like a DDR3 anymore except for the handle? I chopped about a 1/3 -1/2 off the butt end and re-contoured to a more comfy curve. Makes it much less "tactical" looking and more comfortable to hold. Also fits in pocket easier since it is shorter. The Blade almost looks bigger than the handle. I added a little Sun made with brass rod and filework rays on the bolster. i also replaced the 3 rear torx screws with brass slotheads. Yes I could have made the slots all in the exact same direction, but I liked it random. The scales are Blue diamond G10 with a small desert ironwood inlay. i wanted all wood, but since this is my carry knife, G10 survives the beating from the junk in my pocket better. Since it's my user too, I left the blade finish brushed. I was actually sick and tired of polishing the bolsters. The polished bolsters look great but I swear they scratch if I squint at them. Their is a thin piece of white micarta in between the bolsters and the G10. The filework I tried to get "Aztechy". At least it looks like Aztec to me. I deliberately let the spine be not perfect. As if it was carved into rock and then work unevenly by time. In real life it looks "soft" and in good contrast to the very simmetrical filework on the liners and blade. The fileworked cutouts on the spines (the "C" shapes) go all the way through the spine and can be seen on the inside of the knife. I left a brushed finish on the spine, but polished the edges of the liners and also raised the spine pattern about .5mm over the edge of the liners that can be physically felt. I also did NOT polish any of the file cuts and left them with the original file marks. For some reason it looks better that way. n the last knife I polished all the file work. The odd thing I did was to finish every piece seperately so that instead of perfectly flush edges, like between the bolster and liner, the edges of each piece are barely rounded from the buffing wheel. It gives it that "THIS WAS NOT DONE BY A MACHINE" look. I also filed off the smallest ring on the thumb stud so it would be the same thickness as the knife. Here are some more CRAPPY pictures for your amusement! Can't afford another digital camera yet. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...SpineShows.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...ForDetails.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-.../SpineOpen.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...nBladeOpen.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...SideNoClip.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...wBladeOpen.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...losedSpine.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-12/572793/Open.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...sedBolster.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...ipSideOpen.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...pSideOpen2.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...NoClipSide.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...BladeOpen2.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...eBladeOpen.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...edBackSide.JPG http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...ewBladepen.JPG |

Xer0,
That's a pretty nice lookin' knife you got there! You can definately tell you put alot of love (sweat and elbow grease) into that! I really like the "brass rod sun" you did, that's a cool idea! I also really like the work you did on the clip...looks cool! One thing that can definately be said is, "I don't think there's ONE piece on that knife that you didn't customize to be YOURS!" That's the awesome thing about these kits from Darrel, he's given us a canvas...now we just have to make the masterpiece! Great job Xer0! Keep it up! __________________ SSgt Shane M.
