Talking Finally finished first knife!

Wow, what a journey. I won't bore everyone with all of the details on how this got started, but it has been a real learning experience.

I need to give some big thanks for the people that have helped, prodded, educated and put up with me during this process. In no particular order: Ray Richard, Matt Pinoy, Nick Marcelja and everyone that has contributed to my posts here! I need to add a big thanks to Bruce Evans for the tutorials on his website. They were instrumental on getting the finish on the blade and in making the sheath.

This is a 5160 blade with Purple Heart scales. It was differentially heat-treated and edge quenched in candle wax. It has a 600 grit hand rubbed finish and a custom made sheath.

There is still some forge scale on the blade (that's not a makers mark ). This is not a perfect knife, but I've learned a lot and the next one will be better.

Thanks for looking and thanks again to all who helped!

ALSO: please provide any constructive critisism that you can think of.

Thumbs up

Aint nothing wrong with that.

Personally I wouldn't worry about the forge scale. Steen Nielsen Makeks a lot of blades that are forge finished. Ther are polished on the side but not smoothed out and show the hammer marks. I think that they make a handmade knife look exactly that..... Hand made!

It can only get better from there!

That looks realy good.
Not perfect but thats not the point. If the new knife isn't better than the last then i'm not pleased with it. For me the improvments are half the fun.
It's good to get better.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. It really does feel good to get the first one completed.

In addition to learning the basic steps of making a knife, some of the specific lessons I learned were:
- get the blade finished before attaching the handle scales
- use something other than a small sharpening stone to put the bevel on the blade
- grinders get the bevel on the blade much faster than a small stone (see above)
- when drilling the holes in the sheath for sewing it shut, be sure to keep the sheath flat otherwise the holes in the back of the sheath don't line up nearly as nice as they do on the front of the sheath
- keep your leather working area very clean as the leather will soak up any oils or metal dust in the vacinity or on your hands
- always be very nice to your friends, because they can really get you out of a bind

Sweet little blade! And I have a soft spot for forge marks. Leave them there.
