L6 heat treat
Hi All,
I got some L6 from Crucible. It was 50 cents a pound for 7/8" round so I couldn't pass it up (Shipping cost more than the steel!) Anyway, I am just wondering what quench media and especially what tempering temps people use for hunters and for bowies. Thanks, John __________________ John Frankl |

L-6
John,
It's been so long since I've used any L-6, I hesitate to give exact guidance. I can tell you that it is an oil quench steel, and can be quenched just like 5160 or 52100. Although I've not seen/heard of any benifits of multiple quenching it. If you go to Crucibleservice.com and then click on anything under the "Select A Grade Group" it will bring up a pop up screen with tabs at the top. Click on the tab that says "Tool & Die Steel for Metalforming", and under that you will find L-6 (Crucible calls it "Champaloy" ) this page will give you all the details on L-6. The best thing is to take this data and use a few piece of your L-6 to experiment and find out what works best for you. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

Be Careful
Hey Guys,
I am not trying to dispute what Mr. Ed Caffey but be carful of the information given by Crucible. I have found some of there information given in there orange book to be incorect or a little off. I was told that information was given for tool builders and they wasn't as precise as we are. Maybe they have done some more research and corrected it on there website. It is odd people with there background giving fuzzy info. __________________ Keep It Sharp, Chris Bowles www.bowlesknives.com |

your right!
Your certainly correct Chris! That's why I really suggest experimenting. Most of the heat treat info out there is based tool making and can only be a fuzzy baseline for us.
