Description
Here we have a beautiful example of why Randall Made Knives is one of the most Legendary names in the business. This beautiful looking model 12 ?Bear Bowie? is well optioned out with an 8 inch 440 stainless steel blade, nickel silver double forward guard and butt cap both with custom engravings; the engraver is unknown as the knife has no marks of any kind to tell who did the engravings. Polished duralumin and black fiber spacers and a beautiful Burl Wood handle to top it off. It is complete with a black leather ?model A? sheath with a salmon colored sharpening stone. Randall Made Knives are one of the best investments and all around collectibles anyone could own so don?t miss out.

Hello Greg
Welcome to the forum. That's a great looking Big Bear Bowie. They are one of my favorite Randall designs. Here is a pic of mine made in the mid 1960's In my opinion, engraving a modern Randall in many cases enhances the value. Especially when done by a recognised engraver like the late Tom Leschorn. I say modern Randall because to engrave an early collectable Randall and changing the original look of the knife would detract from the value. Here are your pictures. Regards, Sam |

Would there be any way to find out who done the engraving?
That Randall you have is awesome thanks for posting... |

If you look close at the bottom of the butt cap
It looks like it has been Chrome coated or something it looks like Brass or copper is showing through.. It just doesn't look right to me... |

It's hard to tell from the photo, but I suspect it is solid brass. If not, it is solid duralumin.
If there is no name or initials, it would be hard to track it. Perhaps the style will give someone here a clue of who may have done it. Sam |

Quote:
Your knife was built much later than the shop would have been involved with chrome plating, and if it were in that timeframe, the blade would have ben the only portioned plated. Having said that, it's not out of the realm of thought that it could have been electro-plated by a previous owner, possibly the engraver himself. it appears to have been taped off for the process, although it's impossible to tell by the photos themselves. As far as Engravers, 9 out of 10 cannot engrave a Randall because they do not have the proper clamping devise to hold it for the procedure. But that still leaves 100's of people who can! Most of them do not sign their work either, so without provenance there is really no way of telling... TB |

Wow.. I don't usually "take" to modern work, but this is extraordinary in some respects. I like the minimalist on the hilt. But I think the pommel cap is especially special (yuk yuk). It looks all brass, no chrome. But the "engraving" seems to be raised relief like the background it sits on top of. In that case it may not be technically "engraving" at all, more like hammered/punch work. The spaced punch depressions that define the background on the pommel butt are unusual and artistically effective.

It would be cool to have the sheath punch hammered in same design as the pommel butt and the photo background. Oh well.. I stick to what I stick to... Vietnam era.
