First Turkish Twist

Hi all been goofing around yesterday in the shop. I forged up this 6 bar Turkish Twist a few months ago and finally got around to forging a blade out of it. I was trying to keep the pattern flowing through the tip of the blade so I basically did what I will call a double bird mouth.

Let me know what you think.

Here I made a template of what I had in mind for the blade for forging reference and a piece of the 6 bar turkish twist.

Blade forged to shape

Just knocked off the scale and a quick etch to see what I have

Tomorrow I will try and get this one surface ground so I can move on with it.

Thanks for looking.

Hey Bing well here is a pic but dang if I did not find a flaw, had some trapped flux between two of the bars. I can save the blade but it will need to be re-profiled.

Very nice Mike. Too bad about the flaw. It will still be a great looking blade even after the re-profile.

Mike, Just remember to create an opportunity. As we all know this damascus thing can sometimes present challenges that test our patience to no end. Looking forward to seeing what you create.

Take Care Pal

Thanks guys.

Bing I find it more frustrating than challenging :P or is it the other way around. The dang flaw is very small at least it is near the cutting edge so I will loose about 3/16" in blade width but it will still be about 1 1/4" wide so maybe just a slimmer version of what it is not sure yet have to think this out and make some sketches.

Cool flaws, voids, in damascus

Dear Mike, Too bad about that flaw, I had the same thing happen too many times..... until Jerry McClure told me to try this. Next time you make any billet, weld every seam in your billet completely, leaving nothing open, no open ends or sides. It doesn't take much weld, it's not a strength thing, it's just to seal the pcs. Do this each time you re-stack or make any welds. Now heat to welding temp and crush weld or power hammer,, yes you do not use any flux!!! This is just as you would make a "canned steel" mosaic. A sealed tube with your stuff inside! It's the air and the trapped flux that is making the voids. All the experts will tell you , you need flux to weld, then the same experts will tell you how to make a can of mosaic pattern steel and use no flux inside that!!! Go figure!!! I don't have any more problems with my welds and flaws since I started doing this! Check out my damascus on my web site if you need to see to believe! Jon

Hi Jon,

I usually do not have flaws but they do happen. I was going to dry weld this on the final weld but did not want to have to grind all that weld off. I should have maybe put it in a can. Well the next one I will do a few things different and hope there is no flaws with the precautions I do on the next one.

By the way I enjoyed cruising your website and nice work.
