440-C Grades
I have just started to use 440-C steel. The problem is. the time it takes to clean the steel and get it ready to grind. I like to have my ricasso almost ready for 400grit. Are , is there a better grade of 440-C, it would be worth the xtra money to save an hour or two. I would appreciate any expertise on this subject and thanks. Ken |

Although I am not a regular user of 440C, I believe that some suppliers might offer it in precision surface ground form. That would eliminate the mill scale that's giving you trouble. |

Ken,If you cant find any precision ground, check w/local machine shops & see if they know where you could get it done in your area.Another thing to try is a bubble belt, available from Tru-Grit=1-909-923-7046,1-909-923-4116,orders only=1-800-532-3336.That belt is made for removing mill scale.Hope this helps. Mill scale is especially hard on belts. The two things I do to minimize this are to (1) buy the cleanest stock I can find, and (2) soak the bar in white vinegar for a day or two. After soaking, rinse with water and rub the the scale off with some steel wool. You may want to try some of the suggestions before settling on PG. Brett |

Do you profile your blades 1st? It makes it a little easyer , less metal to grind off. |
