Peening pins the old-fashioned-way...

I read Blackie Collins' book on repairing folding knives recently.
In there he used a special tool to peen pins...it looks like a concave drill bit....anyone know where to get one of these?

I'm looking to refurbish some old folders given to me, and thought this tool would add a professional touch to my work...

Thanks,
D. Hoots

I haven't seen that book and have never heard of a special tool for peening pins. However, after the pin is peened there is a tool for rounding the head of the pin. Many people just make their own but you can buy some from Sheffield Knife Supplies. They are called Cup Burrs at Sheffield's. I have seen them referred to as Head Spinners or Pin Spinners in other places .....

I have a tool like you describe given to me many years ago by Bob Ogg. I am not sure but I think it is either tool steel or a drill bit dished out to fit a 3/32 pin. I have one for a 1/8 pin too although I expect one would do either. Bob used this to set his pivot pin. I think the spinner would work fine on other pins. One maker I know uses a polished ball pien hammer to set the pins which makes them swell in the hole. The polish is to leave the outside of the pin looking good in the handle material. In repair, you would not use this of course.
