Return to Color
After the last, stark black fixed blade it's time to return to colors:
3" Damasteel blade with sapphire thumb stud Timascus scales anodized to blues, greens, and a touch of pink and purple - it changes colors depending upon the viewing angle and light. Thanks to Coop for picking up the colors with his great photography! |

Any regular participant on the forums knows who made that one with just one peek.. Very cool as usual Kelly. Design wise, I like the way the pins are located towards the very ends and are tiny. It helps with the overall flow, and lets your eyes dance over the scales with all those colors. Thumbs up...Rich

I have handled a BUNCH of Kelly's knives and this one knocked me out! Simply the most precise craftsmanship and design. I love it. I did very little enhancement to the colors on this one. It really is this bright!
Kelly, your pic looks garbled, and I know why: Don't use fototime's 'standard' setting to post, as they compress the heck out of it. I *always* use the 'original' (as uploaded) version all the time. I just changed your suffix to 'orig' and look at the difference... Coop |

Wow!!!
Simply Fab....
Ok, it there a sections somewhere on this site that tells how to achieve these coloring/blueing or whatever, or techniques? Am very curious... The detail is awesome!! super coloring job, kelly. love it! and nice pics, jim.
thanx fellas. . charles - do a search on coloring timascus. it can be done with heat or by anodizing, just like regular titanium. you will get different results with each method. __________________ wayne things get better with age ... i'm approaching magnificent |

Thanks for the very nice compliments, and thanks to Coop for another outstanding photographic presentation.
The coloration of Timascus is always interesting and fun. I've experimented with torch applied heat, my oven, anodizing and molten salts - the only two methods that work effectively for me are anodizing and torch applied heat (with a heat sink) The torch method, with a heat sink, is usually a surprise, and produces dramatic contrasts between the different titanium alloys; while anodizing produces more predictable colors, but with subtler shadings, with the best results at higher voltage. Tom Ferry and Chuck Bybee, Alpha Knife Supply, are the source for timascus and very helpful with specifics. |

The knife is truly irridescent--like pearl. At one angle you see blue, at another you see purple. It's crazy.

Kelly I have seen most knifes made using our Timascus. This one is the best example of anodizing I have seen to date however. What voltages and solutions did you use to achieve the colors you got? Nice job guy - I'll forge up some more for ya.

"plain ole Bill":
I thought I had stocked up with enough timascus to last the year while at the June Blade show, but may have to put you back to work sooner than expected. My process for these scales was: - sand to 2400 grit followed by mirror buff w/ pink rouge - etch for a few minutes in Reactive Metals Ti etching solution - anodize at 110-115 volts in 1% sulfuric acid solution - rinse thoroughly I would like to add credit to Brian Tighe for advising me of his success with anodizing timascus on one of his recent folders, and to Tim Herman for sending a photo of Brian's beautiful dagger.
