Joe Flournoy.
In my opinion Joe Flournoy is one of the preeminent bladesmiths of today. It seems that very little is mentioned about him or his knives on the forums and I kind of wonder why that is? In the last three or four American Bladesmith journals Joe has had an ad with a striking looking mosaic bowie in it. I have contacted him to check into the possibility of getting one similar to it. What can you folks tell me about his knives from a collectors point of view? This knife will never be used.

From his bio at the Moran school:
Joe Flournoy, of El Dorado, Arkansas, attained the Master Smith distinction in 1992. He has won any number of major awards for his knives, including Best Forged Blade at the 1992 Blade Show, and in 1993 he received the coveted W. F. Moran Award. In 1995 he won the Blade Show award for the Best Damascus. His work has featured in most of the leading knife journals. From his bio at Knifeart.com: "Flournoy knives are sculpted in the beauty of the past and the refinement of the future." -Larry Connelley Master Smith Joe Flournoy "sculpts" steel into functionally beautiful knives. Flournoy knives come from the hot forge of a country blacksmith's shop. A Flournoy knife is sure to be enjoyed for a lifetime. Flournoy knives have won many awards throughout the years including: Best Hand Forged Knife-1991 & 1993 Blade Show, Moran Award- Knife of the Year-1993 Blade Show, Best Damascus Design-1995 Blade Show. Why make knives? "I enjoy the fit and the finish of a handmade knife. I like close tollerances and the interaction between the various peices of the knife. Knifemaking is the most challenging and satisfying thing I have ever done." What is important is a knife you make? "My knives should look good and the lines must flow. My knives will just feel alive in your hand." What is your knifemaking history? "I started in 1977 and joined the knifemakers guild in 1979. After the blade smith's school opened in Old Washington, I was the first person to enroll in a class. Bill Moran taught me basic forging." __________________ Gabe Newell Last edited by Gabe Newell; 05-17-2004 at 12:30 AM. |

Maybe it's just that we are in two different dimensions.
Thanks for the pictures Gabe, I would love to see more of Joe's knives. I am hoping to get him to email me some pictures. __________________ Avatar is my Wild Goo. |
