Heat treating 1095....

1095 should be brought to approx. 1550F and then immediately oil quenched in warm (130-160 degree oil).
Don't hold at or above this temp! Just get there and then quench. Tempering temps are any where from 400F to 500F depending on what you want to come out with.
1095 is notorious for being inconsistent, and varies from batch to batch. You will have to play with it to achieve the results you want.

if 1095 is not very consitent, then what metal would you suggest i use since i am a novice. A metal that is more forgivable might be a better option for my first few attempts.any suggestions would be appreciated.

5160 or 1084; both are more consistant, but 5160 would be my recommendation as it is what was recommended to me.

5160, and 1084 are great for the learning stages, and experienced alike.
They are a little easier to work than most steels, and a bit more forgiving.
